About PTA®

As the largest child advocacy association in the United States, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA®) speaks on behalf of every child on such important issues as education, health, and safety. PTA volunteers provide countless hours of service to their schools and communities to help students succeed and to help children and families grow.

About McWhirter Elementary School

In the 2026-2027 school year, McWhirter Elementary School has 93 teachers and staff and over 700 students.

School Mission

The mission of Margaret S. McWhirter Elementary Professional Development Lab School, the pioneer of innovative instruction, is to empower each student to develop inner strength and unique talents, so that he or she will rise above adversity, and be a leader in his or her rapidly changing world, through a collaborative school community committed to continuous improvement that fosters love, respect, service, and celebration of each learner’s unlimited potential.

Title I

Title I, Part A is a federal program that provides extra funding for academic support, resources, and family engagement to help every student succeed. Families and community members play an important role in shaping our Title I program, and we welcome your feedback at any time throughout the year.

About McWhirter PTA

McWhirter PTA Does

Support the educational programs and extracurricular activities of the school.
Encourage parents’ involvement in their individual children’s lives, education, class, and school.
Provide feedback and suggestions for school programs
Coordinate programs and projects that will support or enrich the curriculum.
Encourage/fund the increased exposure of students to technology.
Provide feedback/assist with increased awareness of school safety and security issues.
Organize fundraising efforts to support some additional programs, equipment, and services not covered in the school budget.
Support the educational goals of the school and assist with attaining those goals through parent and community volunteerism.
Recruit volunteers and coordinate volunteer efforts to staff PTA functions and assist with school programs.
Stay aware of legislation and political issues that may impact education and schools.

McWhirter PTA Does NOT

Run the school.
Force parents to participate in PTA and/or school activities
Set policy regarding school programs.
Define the school’s curriculum.
Dictate the technology platforms and/or software used by the school.
Define or interfere with the school’s security program and policies.
Control the school’s budget.
Set the educational goals, testing requirements, or compliance factors.
Have jurisdiction or authority over school staff, teachers, and other employees.
Endorse a particular political candidate or commercial concern.

PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education. Membership in PTA is open to anyone who wants to be involved and make a difference for the education, health, and welfare of children and youth.
